Shungite is a mineraloid rock of Precambrian origin composed predominantly of non-graphitized amorphous carbon, with carbon content varying between 30% and 98% depending on the classification. Its formation occurs in marine sedimentary sequences approximately 2 billion years old, found mainly in the Republic of Karelia, Russia, where ancient organic matter was subjected to geochemical transformation processes without reaching the degree of complete graphitization. Its intense black to dark gray color results from the high concentration of carbon in its composition. The carbonaceous matrix has an amorphous structure with the possible presence of fullerenes — spherical allotropes of carbon — identified in some samples, giving the shungite electrically conductive characteristics that vary depending on the carbon content of the specimen. Hardness: 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale. Density: 2.1 to 2.4 g/cm³. Crystalline system: amorphous. Available variations, approximate data: 1 to 3 cm — Approx. 0.010 kg — 250 pcs per kg 3 to 6 cm — 0.030 to 0.150 kg — 30 pieces per kg 6 to 15 cm — 0.150 to 0.800 kg — 2 to 3 pieces per kg
