Selenite is a variety of gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) that comes in transparent to translucent crystals of high purity. It is formed by the slow evaporation of lakes and shallow seas rich in calcium sulfate, precipitating in evaporite sedimentary layers, or in rock cavities and fractures by low-temperature hydrothermal precipitation. Its transparency and white to colorless color result from the high purity of the hydrated calcium sulfate and the absence of significant impurities during crystallization. It presents perfect cleavage in three directions and a characteristic vitreous to silky shine, with crystals that are often tabular or prismatic with well-defined faces. Hardness: 2 on the Mohs scale. Density: 2.31 to 2.33 g/cm³. Crystalline system: monoclinic. Available variations, approximate data: 1 to 3 cm — Approx. 0.010 kg — 250 pcs per kg 3 to 6 cm — 0.030 to 0.150 kg — 30 pieces per kg 6 to 15 cm — 0.150 to 0.800 kg — 2 to 3 pieces per kg
