Smoky Quartz Q.B. - Gross

Quality B Smoky Quartz is a variety of quartz (SiO₂) with a brown to dark gray color, originated by the same process as Quality A Smoky Quartz — natural exposure to gamma radiation from radioactive elements in the surrounding rocks, generating defects in the crystalline lattice associated with color centers involving aluminum and hydrogen ions. The Quality B classification differs from Quality A due to the higher incidence of inclusions, veils, internal fractures or irregular color distribution, natural characteristics of the crystalline growth process. It maintains the same physical and chemical properties of the species, with the distinction between qualities being exclusively a visual and commercial selection criterion. Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale. Density: 2.65 g/cm³. Crystalline system: trigonal.
