Pyrite is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS₂, being the most abundant sulfide in the Earth's crust. Its formation occurs in a wide variety of geological environments: hydrothermal veins, sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks, often associated with deposits of gold, copper and other metallic sulfides. Its metallic golden-yellow color — which earned it the historical nickname "fool's gold" — results from the crystalline arrangement of iron and sulfur, which reflects light in a characteristic way. It often crystallizes in cubic, pyritohedral or octahedral shapes, with striated surfaces typical of the species. Hardness: 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Density: 4.9 to 5.2 g/cm³.
