Jadeite is a sodium pyroxene with the chemical formula NaAlSi₂O₆, constituting one of the two mineral varieties commercially classified as jade, alongside nephrite. It forms exclusively under conditions of high pressure and low temperature, characteristic of subduction zones, where ultramafic rocks are metamorphosed at depth and subsequently exhumed to the surface. Its color — which varies between white, green, lilac, orange, yellow and black — is determined by the presence of impurities and ionic substitutions in the crystalline structure. The characteristic green, the most commercially valued, results from the presence of chromium (Cr³⁺) and iron partially replacing aluminum in the mineral network. The fine granular texture and interlacing of the crystals give the material high impact resistance. Hardness: 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Density: 3.2 to 3.4 g/cm³. Crystalline system: monoclinic.
