Hematite with Phantom — Rolled

Hematite with Phantom is a mineral association between Hematite (Fe₂O₃) and Hyaline Quartz (SiO₂), where hematite was deposited on the surface of a quartz crystal during an interruption in crystalline growth, being subsequently covered by a new layer of transparent quartz. This process generates the structure called phantom — or ghost — visible inside the crystal as an outline or silhouette of the previous crystalline form, marked by the hematite film between the growth layers. The red to metallic gray color of the hematite contrasts with the transparency of the host quartz, making the phantom visible inside the piece. The mechanical rolling process progressively rounds edges and corners, resulting in a smoothed external profile that preserves the characteristic internal structure. Hardness: 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale (composite). Density: 2.65 to 5.30 g/cm³ (variable depending on the proportion of hematite). Crystalline system: trigonal.
